A hockey players biggest fan 99% of the time is the bag of flesh and bones we call the hockey dad....notice how I didn't mention brains or hearts? Most are OK but over the years there have been some fine examples of HDGW....hockey dad gone wild.
In 2003 a Calgary a HDGW filed a statement of claim against Springbank Minor Hockey Association claiming that coaches and evaluators showed favoritism towards their own kids during all star evaluations. HDGW claimed that by assigning his kid to house league and having to wear a house league jersey the association inflicted mental suffering and emotional stress on the boy. "He became socially isolated and expressed a desire to immediately quit his beloved game of hockey,"
Apparently $50000.00 should restore the kids self esteem.
In 2000 a Reading Massachusetts parent/coach was taken to the hospital after a fight with a HDGW. Parents in the stands got agitated as a non contact scrimmage got a little chippy and a fight ensued. The man later succumbed to his injuries.
Remember just a couple of years ago in London? Officials claim a Kitchener player was injured when checked from behind by a London player, which sparked a fight. The London player was thrown out of the game and suspended for three more. When the game ended the linesman was attacked by a HDGW while leaving the ice. There was even an cell phone clip making its way around the media of this event.
And then there is the HDGW who is in charge of discipline in his league who sent emails to officials complaining about calls against his son on a little fake artist. HDGW even went so far as to not discipline another player who took out this little fake artist and laid him up for a couple months with post concussion syndrome....what an icehole!
